A necklace is an article of jewelry consisting of a cord or chain (often bearing gems) worn about the neck as an ornament (especially by women). The chain or the cord of the necklace is often attached with a locket or pendant to enhance its appeal. However, necklaces are also made of cloth which is further accessorized with shells, rocks (particularly gems) or even wood.
A necklace that is shorter in diameter and usually worn higher on the neck is called a choker. A choker could be 14" to 16" long and is worn on the base of the neck. Besides precious metal, chokers are also made of velvet, beads, leather or other metals. These are available in various colors and designs adorned with sequins or studs or colorful pendants. Necklaces essentially comprise of chain or chains of gold silver or other metals and ornately studded with precious or semi precious gems or stones. Many traditional Indian designs are available in this category ranging from kundan, pearl, emeralds, minakari, diamonds, rubies etc. A combination of the above is also highly favored. High degree of craftsmanship goes into the making of these necklaces which comprise of either intricately ornate designs or simple patterns.
Pearl necklaces are the most common and have been worn for hundreds of years and the designs have evolved into a more modern appeal. A graduated pearl necklace comprises of larger pearls in the middle gradually become smaller toward the clasp. A Bib necklace contains multiple strands of stepped pearls. A uniform pearl necklace comprises of pearls of the same size, although normally there is a slight difference towards the ends so they appear to be in proportion. A dog collar necklace consists of many pearl strands that sit close to the base of the neck. The other kind of necklace is called a matinee necklace which is 22" to 23" long and usually sits at the top of the cleavage. An opera necklace on the other hand is 30" to 36" long and should sit at the breastbone A princess necklace is 18" long. Its length is between the choker and matinee necklace. Most of the Indian necklaces are skillfully handcrafted. The corresponding pendants could either be symbols or trendy design patterns or even comprise of images of god either engraved usually engraved within the metal or the metal is carved into particular designs. |
