A finger ring as the name suggests is a piece of jewellery or ornament in the shape of the band that is worn around the finger. It consists of a circlet of precious metal (often set with jewels) worn on the finger. Rings are essentially worn by both men and women. Rings can be made of metal, plastic, wood, bone, glass, gemstone and other materials. They may be set with a "stone" of some sort, which is often a precious or semi-precious gemstone such as ruby, sapphire or emerald, among other gems or stones. Rings can be worn on any finger for that matter; however there are special rings to worn for special occasions like engagements or marriages or even for religious purposes.
An engagement ring can be in gold or any other precious or semi-precious metal either plain or studded with precious stones. Traditionally engagements rings are worn to signify and indicate an engagement of the man and woman to be married. Similarly, a wedding symbolizes marital commitment and is usually presented on marriage ceremonies to both the spouses.
In india, rings are also worn for spiritual or religious purposes that are set in specific stones or gems. A branch in Vedic astrology uses gem stone therapy for both astrological as well as healing purposes. Some gems are worn to ward off evil or bad luck. These gems can be set in silver or gold or other metals. In some cases specific gems need to be set in specific metals for improved efficacy which would be advised by the consulting astrologer. Healing gems also claim to impart a sense of overall wellbeing and good health. In fact, this is a special study and practice carried out in a big way in india and many people swear by its efficacy.
The other type of rings commonly worn in india is called toe rings or "Bichhiyas" in Hindi. These are worn on the toes by women to adorn their feet. These are small circular bands usually made of metal worn on the toes. Although these are commonly worn by married women, toe rings are fast gaining popularity as a trendy accessory donned by young teenage girls as well. Toe rings are usually made of silver and worn in pairs on the second toe of both feet. These are ornately designed and many more contemporary designs are also available to cater for modern fashion tastes. The sizes are usually adjustable and look great with sandals or any open-toe footwear. The base material used is usually metal. However beaded and woven toe rings are also available. |
